Resumindo, para resolver, segui os seguintes passos:
-Instalei o KDE (yum install @kde como "root", no terminal);
-Entrei no KDE uma vez (400 MB depois...);
-Entrei novamente no Gnome3 e conectei o monitor externo. Surpresa! Apareceu um assistente de configuração (que não tinha instalado antes) para configurar o monitor nativo e também o monitor adicional.
Para "chamar" novamente o assistente faça como na figura abaixo:
É importante frisar que não encontrei esta dica em nenhum tutorial, e em alguns fóruns isto é considerado um "bug".

In short, to solve the following steps follow:
